Meet fellow Rotarian, CAROL HOSFORD
I grew up in the small town of Farmington, Maine. Most of the time I was outdoors: ski racing in the winter and spending part of most summers at Scout camp, where I trained as a Junior Maine Guide and eventually taught swimming and canoeing.
After graduating from Wellesley College, I went to Yale University where I met my husband-to-be, Charlie. He was studying architecture at Yale. We spent four years in New Haven; I taught English at North Haven High School after earning my MAT. Charlie graduated first in his architectural class. We were drawn to Vermont by the group of recent Yale graduates who had settled here.
I was an educator for most of my professional life. I taught English as a second language in Finland, where Charlie had a Fulbright for a year. I also started a nursery school. After three years of teaching 3-5 year olds in my home, the Waitsfield Church, and the building where Roots Works now exists, I became certified at the elementary school level and began teaching grades 4-6 at the Waitsfield School. After nine years of teaching I became Principal, a role which I held for 20 years, until 2004. My best accomplishments were hiring wonderful teachers and creating district-wide curricula.
After retiring, I was elected State Representative, where I served on the water/wildlife and education committees.
My best experience in Rotary has been membership on the scholarship committee, where it’s been my privilege to see resumes from a remarkable group of high school graduates.
Charlie and I are here all year, though we’ve been fortunate to travel quite extensively. Our most recent trip was to Rwanda and Tanzania last summer with our children, Kate and Dave, and their families. Spending a morning with a gorilla family in the wild and ballooning over the Serengeti while watching wildebeest migrations were lifetime highlights.
