MRV Rotary Newsletter
November,  2024

Welcome to official stick season. I apologize for the tardiness of this newsletter. Howard and I were away for a few weeks, thanks to the spectacular professional travel guidance of Tom Byrne and his "Better Travel" business. You're welcome, Tom. 😉

In my last newsletter I mentioned that many of you were traveling to the lower latitudes or elsewhere for the colder months. Please remember, that even though you are not with us physically, there are many volunteer opportunities that do not require being here in the Valley.  If you have time on your hands and wish to stay connected while away, email or other remote work is very possible. Please reach out when you receive those notices for help. We would be most grateful!

Speaking of Volunteer opportunities, it is time once again for Board Officer Slate Voting. A slate of proposed Board members has been sent out to all members and nominations are needed for the open positions. Please let Mike know if you are interested or would like to nominate someone.

Dave Koepele organized the cubby build for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta recently. Thank you to all who helped and a huge thank you to Karl Klein for his skill and the use of his workshop. The cubbies were delivered to the Camp yesterday - see photo below - and 9 (I believe) Rotarians helped to set up the Ice Rink. Perhaps next season, we will have some women help with this project.

I don't have all the details but I do know that recently Dara Torre did some pretty amazing work managing the Window Build for those needing help keeping their homes warm and cozy this coming winter. Thank you Dara and all who helped!

Upcoming Rotary meetings:

11/20, 7 a.m., Wednesday breakfast meeting at the Village Meeting House at the Waitsfield UCC.
There are no dinner meetings for November or December due to the holidays.
12/11, 5:30  p.m. Wednesday, Holiday gathering at Afterthoughts, the space above Valley Meade (thank you, Emily Shea). This event will be similar to last year. Stay tuned for more info.
12/18, 7 a.m., Wednesday breakfast meeting at the Village Meeting House at the Waitsfield UCC.

Grants Approved

At the recent Board meeting, members voted to approve a request for $2,000 for the Joslin Library. This will help to underwrite the costs of the civil war historic play, "Keep Up Good Courage". By the way, the play, written by Shevonne Travers and Alice Evans was fabulous! Pat Travers managed the lighting and sound like a pro!

Thank you, Roger Porter, for your work on these grants. You have a very important role and we appreciate all you do!

Volunteer opportunities

The annual Rise Against Hunger food packaging event is scheduled for this Saturday, November 16 at Harwood Union High school. We are happily oversubscribed to the event so if you did not get to sign up, please do so next year. Thank you Ben Olds who will be the Master of Ceremonies and Pete Colgan for once again taking a lead on this.

The Restaurant Raffle sales kicked off last weekend at the Annual Ski and Skate Sale. What a great start as over $600 of raffle tickets were sold. You can help to make this fund raiser a success by signing up to sell tickets at Mehurons. Click the link below. Take it from me, it really is a fun time!  https://mrvrotary.org/1451/Page/Show?ClassCode=Page&Slug=members-only

In addition on the same link, you can sign up to help with Community Pantry deliveries, thank you Doug Stoehr, and if you would like to be a Greeter, use that same link.  Being a greeter is a fabulous way to say hello to folks you have not seen in a while and if you are new to MRV Rotary, a wonderful way to get acquainted. So many ways to get involved!

President's Words
Dear Fellow MRV Rotarians,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with happiness and warmth.

Speaking of warmth, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to our dedicated volunteers who braved the bitter cold at Mehuron’s to sell Restaurant Raffle tickets. Thanks to your efforts, I’m thrilled to share that we successfully hit our goal again this year—well done, team!

As we turn the calendar to 2025, it’s time to look ahead with excitement and purpose. The opportunities before our club to make an impact in our community are many, and I am confident in what we can achieve together in the coming months.

With our Rotary year running from July 1 to June 30, we’ve reached the halfway point. Over the next few months, we’ll be preparing for important initiatives, including our Sponsorship Program—one of our key fundraisers. If you’re interested in being part of this effort, please connect with Tom Emory.  Your involvement makes a difference!

I also encourage each of you to reflect on how you can make this year meaningful as a Rotarian. Whether through taking on a leadership role, joining a committee,  contributing to service projects, or introducing a friend to Rotary, your contributions are invaluable to our mission.

Thank you for your continued dedication to the ideals of Rotary and our club. Together, let’s make 2025 a year focused on service, cherished friendships, and shared successes.

Many thanks,

Mike

There is so much good work going on here in this Valley as evidenced yesterday at the meeting. Sam Robinson, from the Planning District, shared the results of the Community Wellness Survey - no real surprise that Housing and Cost of living here are tops on folks lists. Suffice it to say, however, that we are all so fortunate to live in this beautiful community. I am continually amazed at the generosity and caring nature of all.
