MRV Rotary Newsletter
April,  2024

Good Morning, all! I suspect this will be the last month for the photo above. Sugarbush has held their pond skimming and Mad River will hopefully hold theirs this coming weekend. In my mind, I am dreaming of daffodils and tulips and keeping a close eye on perennials as they begin to show signs of waking up. The past few days of bluebird weather have been quite special! Hey! Soon the Farmer's Market will even be on our radar and Ben Olds will be looking for Fourth of July parade volunteer signups!

As the MRV Rotary annual sponsor drive is underway, we wish to send a great big Thank you to those sponsors who have already committed to their support again this year. Cabot we are so grateful not only for your delicious cheeses but most importantly your leadership support!

At Wednesday's morning meeting, Ed McDonough shared an update on the progress for opening of the Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Waterbury that MRV Rotary voted to support.  The lease has been signed, an interior layout has been approved and manager interviews are taking place. Soon a truck will be purchased and Habitat staff have applied for $30K of grants to support the facility. Habitat is tremendously grateful for the Rotary promise of support as this has helped to facilitate additional grant funds.

Volunteer opportunities.

Bonnie Barnes and Tom Emory have kicked off the annual sponsor drive as mentioned above. To date, the Club has received $7K in cash or pledges along with the long standing generous donation of $10K from Cabot.  Bonnie and Tom would really appreciate a few more helpers so if you can assist with signing up sponsors, they would be grateful. Just reach out to either of them.

If you have time to help with the Community Pantry deliveries, click this link https://www.mrvrotary.org/page/members-only  and you can sign up.  Thank you Doug Stoehr.
Or if you would like to be a Greeter at an upcoming meeting, use the same link.

Sean Sullivan has been helping to organize volunteers for the new upcoming Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity Re-Store soon to be accepting donations in Waterbury. If you can help with this pre-opening work, please reach out to either him or Ed McDonough.

Grants News

The Mad River Valley Rotary recently awarded $1000 to the Mad River Chorale. For the first time since 2019, the MRV Chorus will join with the South Burlington Community Chorus to perform on Friday May 10, 2024, at the Elley-Long Music Center and Sunday, May 12, 2024 at the Green Mountain Valley School Auditorium in Fayston.  This special event will feature Gabriel Faure’s Requiem but will also include two shorter pieces by Mozart, Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine, and Bernstein’s Make Our Garden Grow from the operetta Candide.  The Rotary award provides specifically for the additional expenses for orchestral accompaniment.
New Education Grants Program
The Mad River Valley Rotary club has established an Educational Grant Program for the purpose of helping our schools in the Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) enhance students' learning experience. MRV Rotary will commit $5,000 per year to these grants. Teachers and staff are being invited to submit grant proposals that will be judged on several criteria:
a)    How they will further the educational mission of HUUSD.
b)    How they will further academic excellence.
c)    How likely the initiative is to successfully achieve the goals enumerated in the proposal."

If you would like to serve on the evaluation team, please reach out to Ed McDonough who is leading the program.
New Member Highlight
Betsy Wilkinson joined MRV Rotary last spring. Here is a bit of info Betsy shared with me about herself so that we can get to know her bit better.

After 25+ years in the greater Boston are, my husband, John and I moved to the Valley full time almost two years ago after spending many years as winter ski people, I was born in Norfolk VA into a Navy family and lived all over the US and Europe before settling in Florida for high school. My work history includes many years at a Boston art gallery, marketing for a large construction management firm and various positions at Fidelity investments until our identical twin girls, Caroline & Emily, were born followed a few years later by Rebecca. I soon became what I fondly call a 'terminal volunteer" with local PTO's, town & school events & political campaigns as well as a greater Boston children's support organization. As we build our new home in Waitsfield (assuming I do not lose my mind!), I plan to become more involved with the Rotary and it's impressive endeavors. Fun fact - I believe the Rotary gave me a small college scholarship through a local speech contest! Thank you all for being so welcoming.
