Good morning! Well all of you hard working Rotarians have certainly been doing the good work while Howard and I were away. Clearly I have much to catch up on! But before I get to work, a quick update on my travels.
We were visiting one of our kids in Seattle and, fun fact, noticed that there are 9 Rotary Clubs within 10 miles of the City! In addition, if I had time, I could have visited one of the 6 Rotary Clubs in Anchorage, AK, while visiting our daughter who lives there. But alas, we had a pretty busy schedule enjoying some kayaking in an island lake, listening to and watching eagles overhead, great hiking, freshly caught fish and dug clams, etc. Yes, we feel quite blessed.
Another reason I feel so fortunate is being a part of this Rotary Community. So sorry to have missed the Changeover Dinner at General Starks Pub at Mad River. From what I heard, it was a memorable event! Click Here for the link to the article that was in the Valley Reporter recently covering our new leader, Pete Colgan. Pete has been busy doing many things lately as you can expect but he also made time to write a short piece for this newsletter highlighting his vision for our Club. You can read the story, RotaryRise, below.
And while I was away, the almost-annual Warren 4th of July parade went off without me! I heard that Susan Klein once again performed rock-star work with organizing the event. 22 Rotarians helped with parking signage, working in the less-than-ideal weather. Yet the one who gets the most accolades is brand new member, Kyle Fisher who made his Rotary work debut.
My email inbox included plenty of information from new member, Erik Russell, who is learning the ropes about the Duck Race Raffle from Doug Stoehr. Many thanks to Erik for jumping into this important effort. Can you believe that Labor day is really only about a month and a half away!!?? And HERE is a link to how you can read all about the upcoming Duck Race Raffle!
On Christmas Eve, 1968, the first manned mission to the moon entered lunar orbit. The Apollo 8 crew captured an image, now known as “Earthrise,” that gave my 13-year-old brain a broader perspective of what living on Earth meant. That perspective fueled an interest in environmental science and an age-appropriate, albeit naïve, desire to “save the world.” While life experience helped me shift that desire toward goals that are a bit more attainable, our work in Rotary is certainly aligned with that raw, initial intention.
At the June 14 breakfast meeting, Bob Holden introduced two of the three MRV Rotary College Scholarship winners. From left, Carlton Cummiskey of Warren, 4-yr., $2,500/year scholarship recipient, Bob Holden and Alanya Morelli of Moretown, 1-yr., $2,500 scholarship. Missing is Aliza Jernigan of Waitsfield who was awarded a 1-yr., $2,500 scholarship.
A total of 22 Rotarians helped out with the 4th of July parade including brand new member, Kyle Fisher. See if you can pick him out!! A few of the helpers are missing but we are grateful for all of the efforts considering the weather!
A word about these newsletters.... I know that these newsletters might be difficult to read on a phone even though they are supposed to adjust for devices. I have notified Club Runner support about this and they are working on it. In the meantime, we will all just need to read the newsletters on our computers or tablets. Thanks for your patience.
